1 day to our date with France
Kaka, Emerson cleared for Brazil trainingBrazilian midfielders Emerson and Kaka, who have been treated for pain in their right knees, will take part in Friday’s practice at the Waldstadion, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said. “They’re ready for training on the pitch,” the CBF said in a statement. Both suffered identical injuries during Tuesday’s 3-0 second round win over Ghana, were substituted and have since been undergoing intensive physiotherapy. Brazil’s other worry for Saturday’s quarter-final against France is striker Robinho, who missed the Ghana game because of a problem in his right thigh. Brazil will play France on Saturday in the quarterfinals, hoping to take advantage of an adversary that won’t be afraid and isn’t likely to come out playing defensively from the start. “A team like France likes to play, too. It will be an open match and that could be good for us,” midfielder Gilberto Silva said. “It won’t be a match in which a team only tries to play defense … France will want to win the match, too.” Brazil struggled when it faced the less traditional teams of Croatia, Australia, Japan and Ghana. The Brazilians won the matches but had trouble getting past the tough marking imposed by the opponents. Only against Japan, which needed to win to keep its hopes of advancing to the second round alive, Brazil was able to display the beautiful game fans expect from the five-time champions. With France also likely trying to play offensively, Brazil expects to have more spaces and an easier time creating scoring opportunities. “It’s a classic. We have a lot of respect for them and they have a lot of respect for us,” defender Juan said. “It’s a different game. It should be very even.” France has won two of the three World Cup matches against Brazil, including 3-0 in the 1998 final at Stade de France. Brazil’s only win came in the 1958 tournament in Sweden, a 5-2 victory behind Pele’s hat trick. The French eliminated Brazil in the quarterfinals of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, winning on penalty kicks. “This should be our toughest match so far,” said midfielder Juninho, who plays for five-time French champion Lyon. “They play with a lot of solidarity, the players are always helping each other.” Brazil is not expecting to pay extra attention to France midfielder Zinedine Zidane, who scored twice in the 1998 final and has been key in France’s campaign this year. “I don’t think (coach Carlos Alberto) Parreira will do anything especial to mark Zidane,” midfielder Ze Roberto said. “Especially because if you do that, then you leave others like (Thierry) Henry or (Patrick) Viera free.” Two-time FIFA player of the year Ronaldinho agreed. “All of their players are great,” he said. “From the goalkeeper to the strikers, they are all well-known internationally. They all have experience.” Brazil and France played two other times since the 1998 final, with France winning 2-1 in the 2001 Confederations Cup in South Korea and then playing Brazil to a 0-0 draw in a friendly in Paris in 2004.
